Movie Review: 'Star Trek Into Darkness'

I saw "Star Trek Into Darkness" with my girlfriend, who had never seen a "Star Trek" film and had only seen a couple episodes of the various shows. She is not a "Star Trek" fan and was highly skeptical of "Into Darkness." She loved the film.

"Star Trek Into Darkness" is the 12th "Star Trek" film and the second in director J.J. Abrams rebooted series. As was true with its direct predecessor, "Into Darkness" is a pure blast of fun, with healthy doses of humor, thrills and pathos, that is accessible to fans and non-fans alike.

Movie Review: 'Iron Man 3'

By Alec Kerr
In my review of 2008's "Iron Man," I mentioned the key to the film's success was quality control. Everything about "Iron Man" was top tier. The film took the often silly material seriously, but still had a sense of fun.
Five years later, I'm glad to say that this idea of quality control is still present in "Iron Man 3," a film that is just as fresh and funny as the first installment in this franchise.

Movie Review: 'Pain and Gain'

This review is based on a true story.

I saw director Michael Bay's latest film "Pain and Gain" as part of a double date with my girlfriend and another couple. I came out of the theater apologizing profusely for dragging others to see such cinematic sleaze. I felt dirty for not only handing over my hard-earned money to this trash, but for convincing others to do so as well. Now I feel it is my civic duty to prevent others from making the same mistake.

"Pain and Gain" is inspired by the true events of the Sun Gym gang, bodybuilders who kidnapped, tortured and murdered wealthy Floridians to get a hold of their riches. Bay saw this as a bountiful source for a black comedy.

Movie Review: 'Oblivion'

Tom Cruise is a movie star. He has been ever since he danced around in his tightie whities in "Risky Business" 30 years ago. He has a raw charisma that at age 50 is as captivating as it was at 20.
